Don't Ask Don't Tell

Colin Powell asked President elect Barack Obama to review the "don't ask, don't tell" policy. It is a policy about gay people in the military. Colin Powell says the policy is outdated. Finally a person willing to admit how horrible this policy is. The gay/lesbian people should be able to serve openly, as it is there constitutional right. The only problem? He asked for it to be reviewed not repealed. I thought that we could move past all the differences. Whether it be gay, or straight, Caucasian or African American, but apparently we are not quite there yet. We are getting closer, but not there yet.

I've never really understood why LGBT people couldn't be in the military. It's not like they wont defend our country, it is not like they are incompetent, it's just who they are. I think a lot of the time it is just assumed that America accepts all people, but in cases like this, it obviously puts that ideal to question. After Women's rights, civil rights, wouldn't you think we moved past all of this? I guess not...

I don't believe that the military things that LGBT people are incompetent or that they are worse at defending our country at all. I think that they are uncomfortable with the fact that these people will be around other people of the same sex (mostly gay men). They don't want soldiers to feel threatened by this...which I think is ridiculous. Also, many people in the military are conservative and are against gays all together. It's just their way of putting more limits on them. It's really sad and hopefully eventually the "don't ask, don't tell" policy will be repealed, but unfortunately, I'm guessing it won't be anytime soon.
